Professional Process Serving in MD, DC & VA
When legal documents need to be delivered correctly, there is no margin for error. Freestate Investigations has provided licensed process serving across Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia since 2005. Whether you need routine service, a same-day rush, or help with a difficult or evasive recipient, we handle every assignment with accuracy, documentation, and full compliance with the rules of civil procedure in each jurisdiction we serve.
Submit the documents you need served — summonses, complaints, show cause orders, writs, garnishments, subpoenas, or letters. We review case details, confirm service level, and flag any special circumstances such as government recipients, tight deadlines, or known access issues.
Service approach is determined by the level purchased — Routine, Rush, Same Day Rush, or On-Demand — combined with the needs of the case. Our nationwide network means local, regional, and national assignments all move through the same intake process.
The assigned server proceeds to the address, verifies location, and confirms paperwork before approach. All observations are documented from arrival to knock. If the document allows substitute service, it is completed with a qualifying adult. If personal-only, we attempt to reach the named individual directly. Up to three attempts are included, varied by time of day. Our experience with Maryland, DC, and Virginia service laws allows us to push back when a recipient’s claim does not hold up to field observations.
For Maryland, DC, and Virginia cases, affidavits are filed with the appropriate court and a copy is sent to you upon successful service. Non-service is documented and emailed directly. Cases outside the region receive all documentation by email. Proof is typically delivered within 2 to 4 business days. Before closing, we verify service was performed correctly, confirm the invoice matches what was ordered, and recommend next steps if service was unsuccessful.
Flat-fee process serving for every case type. Select the level that fits your timeline and we handle the rest — from first attempt through affidavit filing.
*Routine service may take up to 2 weeks total. Attempts are made on random days at random times. Same-Day Rush and On-Demand services require advance confirmation—call (888) 462-2714. Affidavit filing available for an additional fee at local courts only.
Court-compliant delivery of the full range of legal documents across Maryland, DC, and Virginia.
Freestate Investigations handles service for every standard court document type. We serve copies, not originals — no jurisdiction we work in requires originals to be physically served. Electronic submission is preferred and accepted for all document types.
Time-sensitive and complex cases handled with the same documented, court-accepted process.
Not every case fits a standard timeline or a cooperative recipient. Freestate Investigations offers Rush, Same Day Rush, and On-Demand service for time-sensitive matters, along with specialized handling for difficult or evasive subjects, government recipients, and cases requiring alternative service documentation.

Routine service can take up to five business days for the first attempt, depending on submission date and geographic area. That does not mean we wait five days — many attempts happen sooner. Routine services are typically completed or exhausted within approximately two weeks, depending on server caseload in the area.
Standard service includes three attempts, varied by time of day — typically one morning, one daytime, and one evening attempt. A weekend attempt may be included when appropriate. For businesses, attempts are made during realistic operating hours based on the type of business.
If we reasonably believe the correct party is inside, we knock more than once and document all observations. All attempts are completed as purchased. That documentation can later be used to petition the court for alternative service.
In Maryland, DC, Virginia, and most states, substitute service at a dwelling with a suitable adult is legally valid. When a qualifying individual answers and the documents are sub-servable, that may be the only opportunity to effect lawful service. Personal-only requests must be clearly stated at time of order, as they significantly limit options and can reduce the likelihood of success.
No. We serve copies. No jurisdiction we work in requires originals to be physically served. Electronic submission is preferred.
We do not send individual notifications after each attempt. All attempts are documented and included in the final Affidavit of Service or Affidavit of Non-Service. All activity is logged in our case management system throughout.
That email confirms your order is in our system. We will reach out if clarification is needed. Routine service generally takes up to two weeks to complete or exhaust.
